#18 Bulldogs Sweep Metro State To Cap Perfect Opening Weekend

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 18th-ranked Ferris State women's volleyball team completed its quest for four consecutive win to open the campaign as the Bulldogs registered a 3-0 sweep over Metro State (Colo.) on Saturday (Sept. 5) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.        

The win capped the Bulldogs perfect weekend at the Ferris State Invitational, and boosted FSU to 4-0 overall to open the 2015 regular season.             

Ferris State opened with a dominant 25-9 win in the first frame before dispatching Metro State 25-19 in the second and 25-17 in the third and final tilt.           

Senior outside hitter Megan Vander Meer led the Bulldogs with 10 kills against the Roadrunners while senior middle hitter Caroline Heitzman added eight of her own. Senior outside hitter Alexis Huntey chipped in with seven kills.       

FSU senior libero Danielle Dowd finished with 15 of the squad's 34 total digs and freshman hitter Katie Placek added seven in the defensive category.            

The offensive attack was led by junior setter Stephanie Sikorski, who finished her second match of the day with 30 or more assists as she notched 30 in the contest. Earlier in the day, Sikorski posted 31 against McKendree (Ill.) in a 3-0 win.       

Huntey finished with four of Ferris State's eight service aces in the win over Metro State, leading the team in that category.         

Junior outside hitter Summer Greager led Metro State with nine kills on the day and added five digs.            

The Bulldogs hit for a high octane .410 during the match, including a dominant .520 clip in the opening frame which Ferris State won 25-9. The Roadrunners were unable to keep pace, hitting .077 on the day with 17 attack errors.

Ferris State did total nine service errors after making 12 against McKendree earlier in the afternoon.

Overall, Ferris State finished with 39 kills, 34 digs and three total blocks while Metro State compiled 23 kills, 29 digs and no blocks.

Ferris State was one of two teams in the eight-team FSU Invitational to finish with a perfect 4-0 mark, joining fellow Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Saginaw Valley State.

FSU also had three players named to the All-Invitational Team, including Huntey, Heitzman and Dowd.        

The Bulldogs will travel to Denver next weekend for the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge, where they'll square off against some of the nation's top programs in an elite field. FSU first faces Missouri S&T at 2 p.m. (ET) and West Florida at 9 p.m. (ET) on Friday (Sept. 11) s the reigning GLIAC Champions look to build on a four-match winning streak to open the season.

The pairings for Saturday's (Sept. 12) day two action at the 12-team Colorado Premier Challenge will be announced following first day play in the tournament format. Both the third-place and championship matches will be carried live by ESPN3.
