Ferris State Volleyball Splits Two Matches On Final Day At Florida Tourney

Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally fourth-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad split a pair of matches in Florida on Saturday (Sept. 1) as the Bulldogs wrapped up action in the 2018 Terrance Hotel/Courtyard Marriott Classic.
The Bulldogs swept Rollins (Fla.) 3-0 in morning action before dropping a 3-2 decision versus host Tampa in the finale. After playing their initial two matches on the trip in Lakeland on Friday, the Bulldogs competed on Tampa's home floor in Saturday's outings.
In the opener, FSU rolled past Rollins 27-25, 25-15 and 25-20 overall. The Bulldogs hit an impressive .424 with 44 kills and only five attack errors.
Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel and middle hitter Mekayla Carey both tallied a team-leading 12 kills in the match with Carey hitting a squad-best .579 in the three frames.
FSU setter Maeve Grimes dished out 31 assists in the victory while senior libero Katie Placek netted 11 digs in the win. Defensively, FSU limited the Tars to only a .172 attack figure.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs won the opening set against Tampa 26-24, but the Spartans rallied by taking the next two frames 25-23 and 25-16. FSU came back to knot the match with a 25-19 decision in the fourth, but Tampa answered by winning the deciding set 15-12 to take the match.
The Bulldogs were paced in the finale by junior Courtney Brewer with 18 kills. Carey added 16 kills and Cappel produced 13 kills to go along with a team-leading 23 digs.
In addition to Cappel's 23 digs, the Bulldogs got 18 from sophomore Katie O'Connell and 15 by Placek. Grimes dished out 52 assists in the setback.
Overall, Ferris State hit .249 against Tampa, but also had 15 service errors in the loss.
The Bulldogs, who are now 5-3 overall, will return home to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action in Big Rapids this coming week. FSU hosts Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday (Sept. 7) at 7 p.m. (ET) before entertaining Purdue Northwest on Saturday (Sept. 8) starting at 2 p.m. (ET) inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
